Gina Dominique’s 'Trigonometries' series was motivated by various ancient western and eastern artistic and geometric traditions. As a westerner she is most familiar with its symbolism. Within it, a point-down triangle represents a descent into the physical world and feminine energy, and a point-up triangle denotes an ascent into heaven and masculine energy. During 1985-2015, when Dominique studied yoga with both American and Indian teachers, she learned that similar interpretations of triangles hold true within ancient eastern yogic traditions. That is, a point-down triangle signifies transformative energies embodied by Nature- शक्ति, or Śaktī in Sanskrit- pronounced 'Shakti' in English. It is a feminine energy meaning 'ability', 'power,' 'capacity of', 'clinging together', or 'attachment to'. And a point-up triangle indicates Spirit or Consciousness- शिव or Śiva in Sanskrit, said 'Shiva' in English. It is a regarded as a masculine energy, and means the 'experiencing Self'.
