In her Bracciano Paintings, Gina Dominique approaches landscape painting as something imagined. To realize them, she responded to the history and legends of Lake Bracciano, located north of Rome using a mythicogeographic approach. Mythogeography describes the ways landscape becomes a repository of memory, myth, belief, and cultural imagination. In the portfolio, rather than treating the landscape and lake-scape as neutral terrain, Dominique employed her methodology of AutoAbstraction to explore how external environments and her own internal terrain shape one another so multiple narratives and interpretations can coexist. Ultimately, her autoabstract works investigate how landscape painting is constructed through intuition and a physical painting process. They are evidence of an embodied experience, and act as a dynamic field of becoming.
